POLICY BRIEF
Bridging Discrepancies
Sokol Zeneli
The European Union’s enlargement policy and its cohesion policy are often treated as separate agendas—yet their alignment is crucial for a more inclusive and effective integration process. This article examines how discrepancies between these two core policies risk deepening divides between current and aspiring member states. Through an analysis of recent reform proposals and policy debates, it argues for a more coherent framework that embeds candidate countries into EU cohesion mechanisms earlier in the accession process. Bridging this gap is essential for ensuring a more balanced, resilient, and united Europe.
