A Comparative Analysis of the EU Association Framework - Stabilisation Association Agreements & Association Agreements/Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreements
Sokol Zeneli & Gresa Smolica
The operationalisation of gradual integration into the European Union is emerging as a crucial challenge for enlargement policy, exposing a profound "integration paradox" between candidate regions. This research study analyses how disparate foundational frameworks - specifically the older, static Stabilisation and Association Agreements (SAAs) for the Western Balkans Six (WB6) and the newer, dynamic Association Agreements/Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Areas (AA/DCFTAs) for the Associated Trio - impact accelerated pathways toward economic integration, institutional inclusion, and financial convergence.
This research is published as part of the InteGraLe project, realised with the support of the Unit for Analysis, Policy Planning and Historical Documentation - Directorate General for Political Affairs and International Security of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in accordance with Article 23-bis of the Decree of the President of the Italian Republic 18/1967.
