The Western Balkan (WB6) countries have aspired to become members of the European Union (EU) since the early 2000s. Numerous instruments have been introduced as part of this process to support the region's development and integration. Recently, the European Commission (EC) announced the establishment of the New Growth Plan (GP), a financial instrument designed to aid the WB6 countries in integrating into the EU Single Market and implementing necessary reforms for their EU accession. An essential feature of this instrument is the conditionality set by the EC, which requires countries to fulfil specific conditions in order to access the available funds.
What does conditionality entail? How attainable are these conditions for the WB6 countries? Has conditionality achieved effectiveness? - These are some of the questions that our latest discussion paper aims to answer.
