THE EUROPEAN POLITICAL COMMUNITY:
A New Stage for Europe, A New Path for the Western Balkans?
Gresa Smolica and Sokol Zeneli
This discussion paper explores the European Political Community (EPC) as a new platform for pan-European dialogue, established in the wake of significant geopolitical shifts in Europe following Russia's aggression towards Ukraine. The paper analyses how the EPC, with its diverse membership, relates to the European Union's enlargement policy, its specific impact on the Western Balkans accession processes, and the risks it poses regarding democratic values versus geopolitical pragmatism. Ultimately, it questions whether the EPC represents a sustainable new stage for European cooperation and a genuine new path for the Western Balkans' European future, or a complex initiative with uncertain outcomes for the region's long-held aspirations.
