Regional Cooperation in the Western Balkans: Insights from Sokol Zeneli on CEFTA Reforms and Civil Society Engagement
15 January 2025
In a recent interview with Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa, our Director of Programmes, Sokol Zeneli, shared key insights on regional cooperation in the Western Balkans and the neccessity to reform the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA).
During the conversation, Sokol discussed the findings of Re-ACT Lab’s policy brief on CEFTA reforms, focusing on the critical need to introduce Trade and Sustainability Chapters within the Free Trade Agreement. These chapters are essential for ensuring that trade agreements not only promote economic growth but also align with environmental, social, and labour rights standards. The introduction of Domestic Advisory Groups (DAGs), as highlighted in the policy brief, is another key recommendation for fostering greater participation from civil society, academia, and other relevant social groups in the trade policy-making process. This approach ensures that trade policies reflect the needs and priorities of all stakeholders, facilitating a more inclusive and sustainable integration of the region into the global market.
Key points covered in the interview include:
The importance of CEFTA reforms for improving regional trade and cooperation across the Western Balkans.
How Trade and Sustainability Chapters can help the region transition towards more sustainable economic practices.
The role of Domestic Advisory Groups in enhancing civil society participation in shaping trade policies and ensuring transparency and accountability.
This discussion sheds light on the ongoing challenges and opportunities for the Western Balkans (WB6) in aligning with EU standards and progressing towards full integration. The insights from Sokol Zeneli underscore the importance of strengthening civil society involvement and promoting green transition policies as part of the region's broader development strategy.
Re-ACT Lab promotes research and innovation as a means to advance governmental and policy-making reforms in Kosovo and regionally.
